De største portioner, som kan beløbe sig til flere millioner kroner, er til forskningsprojekter. Legater til gymnasieelever og små legater til diverse sociale formål kan være begrænset til et par hundrede kroner. For universitetsstuderende er legaterne ofte på mellem 1.000,- og 15.000,-.
